Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts To Volunteer at Olmsted Park At 3rd Annual Service Day Today

On September 18, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will hold its third annual companywide Service Day. One Community. One Blue. More than 3,000 associates,
known as BlueCrew, will volunteer all together on one day at 39 different community sites across the state—including Olmstead Park in Brookline, part of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy.

At Olmstead Park, BlueCrew volunteers will work alongside Emerald Necklace community leaders.  This Service Day project will allow families to enjoy a healthy environment after volunteers plant asters, serviceberry and hay-scented ferns.

Originally named Leverett Park it was renamed in 1900 to honor it's designer, Frederick Law Olmsted. He designed the park as "a chain of picturesque fresh-water ponds,
alternating with attractive natural groves and meads." Pathways, bridges, and plantings provide a series of vignettes with scene changes along the way. To help draw wildlife, Olmsted built two islands in Leverett Pond to provide shelter and seclusion for nesting birds. Today, people are drawn to the athletic fields, the wildflower meadow and Allerton Overlook, the location of Summer Sundays in the Park concerts each summer. The park features hiking, walking, biking trails for all ages.
